Bobby Petrino

He's coaching the Atlanta Falcons. They're 0-3, have no Mike Vick, have Joey Harrington starting, and really have no future to speak of. Let's say Houston, for whatever reason, doesn't come back. Any chance Petrino could be lured back to college ball (specifically, Arkansas) before his inevitable firing by the Falcons in 2009 at the latest?

That's funny!

Houston Nutt will certainly be gone after this season. He's staring back-t0-back losing seasons in the face in 08 and 09. He's got no Frank Broyles to trick or cloud to blame. He'll parlay his mediocre track record and land a job at a school that would love to win 7 every year and go to a bowl game.

No chance. Petrino ain't leaving on his own free will. He'll force the Falcons to fire him so he can collect the money, and I can't blame him. This is only his first year, so that firing is at least a year or two away at the absolute earliest.

If Nutt leaves or is fired, we're going to hire somebody nobody has ever heard of. It'll be somebody like Gary Patterson at TCU or at least of that level. If anybody thinks we're going to (a) offer a bunch of money to a big name coach; and (b) a big name coach will come here with this amount of fan retardation and FOIA crap, you're just a dumbass. It's not going to happen.

Fire Nutt if you want, but lets be a little realistic about what's going to happen after we do.

I certainly doubt Petrino will go anywhere for at least another year. And the chances of him coming to AR would be slim at any time. If we get a name coach other than Butch Davis or Tommy Tuberville I'd be very surprised.

Also, I hear that "we're not going to pay big money for someone" all the time, and I don't think it's necessarily true. People talk about what we did in the past, but Broyles is no longer running the show. What we did in the past is not as relevant as it would be if Broyles was still in charge. Besides, we offered a substantial amount to Billy G and Calipari in the basketball search.

Now, the question of whether a big name would come here is a different one. Absent a tie (like Davis and Tubby have), or an Alabama amount of money (which we probably won't do), probably not.

I get a huge kick out of some of our yahoo fans when they talk about our potential coaching search. Norm Chow? Jeff Tedford? Steve Spurrier? Steve Sarkisian? Seriously, our "list" of big time coaches is about as long as my middle finger. It's Butch Davis (possible, but unlikely) and Tommy Tuberville (maybe possible, but very unlikely). That's it.

Hellllllo, Jim Leavitt.

I'm for Dan Mullen. 35. Gives a great interview. Part of staff that can flat recruit.

Jim Leavitt can obviously coach, but there's something I don't like about him.

Thankfully, Houston Nutt will have left the talent pool as dry as it can be. No coach can win with the players coming back next season, especially when you consider our schedule. That's going to turn a lot of folks off.

Of course, people who love Houston Nutt will forget that when we go 2-9. I can assure you, Houston's #1 reason for leaving will be because he knows HE too would go 2-9.

Dan Mullen? Does that get anybody's blood pumping? That resounding "hell no" should be proof that hire would be a complete dud. If you're going to upgrade, then upgrade. Dan Mullen? That's not an upgrade.

Fortunately, the question isn't whether a fan thinks a certain coach is an upgrade. The first question is whether the current guy coaching can get us to where we want to be. If that includes an SEC title, then the answer is no. The next question is who's the best guy to replace him. Are there other coaches that would excite me more than Mullen? Sure. But Mullen will get a head coaching job soon. He may be good, may not be, it's a bit of a gamble, but all new coaches we can get are. All I know is that he's the offensive coordinator on a national title team and seems to do a good job of getting his best players the ball in positions where they can excel. Something we can use around here, after watching McFadden go crashing into the line of the scrimmage the last couple of games, picking up a concussion and slight knee injury along the way.

I don't even know who Dan Mullen is, and frankly, unless we do get somebody well known and proven, the new coach is going to be on the hot seat from the day he arrives. Going from a bad situation to an unproven situation is asking a lot of the fans. I would think that the only salve would be getting someone who the fans could look at and say "Yeah, we're struggling with a bad quarterback and a tough schedule, but I have no doubt that this guy is going to win." Dan Mullen is not that guy.

Logan has wicked man love for the Gators right now!

3 straight national titles in the money sports makes it easy.

Mullen is clearly not my top choice. But is it more of a gamble to take a coordinator from a big time school or a head coach from say a Tulsa?

Barry Switzer was on the radio in Oklahoma yesterday or the day before talking about how Arkansas was hot after Mike Leach. I don't want him, I'd rather take a flyer or a Mullen, or a Jimbo Fisher or Bo Pellini.

I frankly can't get fired up about any of those options.

Ask me about Gene Chizik.

Nobody is sure thing. For every Gene Chizik, there's a Bob Stoops or a Bobby Petrino. Same can be said about Mid Major to Major. For every Urban Meyer and Jim Tressel, there's a Dirk Koetter.
