Cotton Bowl Preview

Johnny Fayetteville claims his second straight regular-season pick title with a slim two-game margin over Jimmy G after Navy's victory on Saturday.  The crew (sans Tom Logan) discusses the matchup with Kansas State, a few of our favorite bowl matchups, and general concluding thoughts about the season.  Thanks for a great season of Razorpod.  We will be back after the Cotton Bowl with a final season wrapup show.

2011 National Sleeper Teams Year in Review

The crew's national sleeper teams distinguished themselves in a variety of ways throughout the 2011 college football season...mostly in negative fashion. Here is a rundown of each crew member's national sleeper team. Hide the women and children.

Patrick Williams - Syracuse Orange. Final Record: 5-7. Bowl destination - None. Moment of Achievement - Defeated West Virginia 49-23 on October 21st to move to 5-2 on the season. Moment(s) of Failure - Lost final five games to finish 5-7 and miss out on a bowl game. Scoring stats - 84th in points scored per game (24.2) & 75th in points against per game (28.5). A bad combination. Final Grade - C-

Johnny Fayetteville - Texas Tech Red Raiders. Final Record: 5-7. Bowl destination - None. Moment of Achievement - Defeated No. 1 Oklahoma on October 22nd to move to 5-2 on the season. The win ended OU's 39 game home winning streak. Moment(s) of Failure - Never won another game after beating OU, and just like Syracuse, lost their last five games to miss out on a bowl game. Not sure Texas Tech fielded a defense. Scoring stats - 26th in points scored per game (33.8) & 117th (yes, 117 out of 120) in points against per game (39.3). Good gracious. Final Grade - D

Tom Logan - Louisville Cardinals. Final Record: 7-5. Bowl destination - Belk Bowl versus North Carolina State. Moment of Achievement - Went 5-2 in the Big East and tied for 1st place. Won 5 of their last 6 games. The best of this year's national sleeper teams. Moment of Failure - Lost at home to Florida International. Scoring stats - 100th in points scored per game (21.8) & 14th in points against per game (19.2). Final Grade - B

Jimmy G - Arizona State Sun Devils. Final Record: 6-6. Bowl destination - MAACO Las Vegas Bowl versus Boise State. Moment of achievement - Defeated USC 43-22. Were 5-1 on October 8 and in firm control of the putrid Pac-12 South division. Moment(s) of Failure - lost 5 of their final 6 games including the last four to finish in 3rd in the Pac-12 South. Fired head coach Dennis Erickson which may be a moment of achievement. Scoring stats - 25th in points scored per game (33.9) & 64th in points against per game (64th). Final Grade - D-

Razorpod Picks - Week 14

The bittersweet finale to the college football regular season is upon us. There is a tie for 1st place among the Razorpod crew with Johnny Fayetteville and Jimmy G battling it out for the Picks Title.

PW (47-31): Texas, Virginia Tech, Wisconsin, Oklahoma State, Georgia, Navy, Ohio U.
JF (51-27): Texas, Virginia Tech, Wisconsin, Oklahoma State, LSU, Navy, West Virginia

LSU Wrap

The pod crew wraps up the regular season by discussing the Hogs' 41-17 dismantling at the hands of the LSU Tigers last Friday.  A disappointing end to a really good season, but there is still much to look forward to for Razorback fans.  The crew discusses the bowl possibilities; the various championship games, and Jimmy G picks Army for the 8th year in a row.  The picks contest is tied going down the stretch with Jimmy G and Johnny Fayetteville running neck and neck to the finish.  Patrick and Tom have been mathematically eliminated from contention, but that doesn't stop them from making garbage picks just for fun and games.  Enjoy this edition of Razorpod, and be sure to check back in TWO weeks for the bowl preview show.

Razorpod Picks - Week 13

The Battle of the Boot. 1:30 p.m. Friday afternoon. Baton Rouge, Louisiana. No. 1 vs. No. 3. CBS. Razorpodders' picks for the biggest game, since the Big Shootout in 1969. The Hogs will be playing with heavy hearts for deceased teammate Garrett Uekman. A great season could turn epic with a Hog victory.

PW (43-29): Mississippi State, Washington, Iowa, Alabama, LSU, Ohio State

JF (47-25): Mississippi State, Washington, Nebraska, Alabama, Arkansas, Clemson

TL (43-29): Mississippi State, Washington, Iowa, Alabama, Arkansas, UCLA

JG (46-26): Mississippi State, Washington, Nebraska, Alabama, LSU, Georgia Tech

Miss. State Wrap; LSU Preview

The Hogs are now 10-1 after this weekend's 44-17 defeat of Mississippi State in Historic War Memorial Stadium this weekend. With the victory, and the other upsets around college football, the Hogs have climbed to the unprecedented #3 ranking in the BCS. On this week's show, the crew discusses this week's upcoming national semi-final game against the LSU Tigers, the Hogs chances to play in the National Championship (yes, I am typing that with a straight face), and the ways the BCS dominoes have fallen just right. Other issues are the untimely passing of Hog TE Garrett Ueckmann, the picks contest, and the national media's perception that a rematch is not the right matchup for the national title game.

Tennessee Wrap; Miss State Preview

This week's show brings back the dreaded technical difficulties-in many ways.  JimmyG fades in and out, and Jena's revenge has caused the Razorpod email to explode in a shower of spam.  We have a NEW EMAIL:  r a z o r p o d p o d c a s t at gmail.com  (expanded to defeat the spambots), so please change you emails accordingly.  In the show itself, we discuss the Tennessee blowout win and the upcoming game at Historic War Memorial Stadium this Saturday against Mississippi State.  Enjoy Verne and Gary at their finest:

Razorpod Picks - Week 11

Welcome to the show, Arkansas State. The crew breaks down and predicts the Red Wolves Sun Belt showdown with Louisiana-Lafayette on Saturday. The inside track to the Sun Belt Title is at stake in Jonesboro, and the crew calls for northeast Arkansas to show up and support ASU.

The pick standings are closer than two cousins in Kentucky right now as Patrick Williams has recovered to tie Tom Logan and Jimmy G for 2nd. Johnny Fayetteville continues his chase of the Boston Red Sox and Atlanta Braves for the most epic collapse of 2011 with his lead now down to two games.

PW (38-22): Arkansas State, Georgia Tech, Stanford, Georgia, Arkansas, Texas Tech

JF (40-20): Arkansas State, Virginia Tech, Stanford, Georgia, Arkansas, Iowa

TL (38-22): Louisiana-Lafayette, Virginia Tech, Stanford, Auburn, Arkansas, Kansas State

JG (38-22): Arkansas State, Virginia Tech, Oregon, Georgia, Arkansas, Ole Miss

South Carolina Wrap; Tennessee Preview

Full crew tonight for a discussion of the South Carolina win.  Good victory for the Hogs, and we look forward to next week's final game of the season in RRS.  Picks contest tightens up considerably, and once again P Williams has a doubleup to catch up opportunity.

Razorpod Picks - Week 10

This Razorpod Picks and long distance dedication goes out to Jena. Thank you for the interest in the Razorpod Blog and yours truly. The picks race standings stayed the same after 4-2 weeks for the crew. A special congratulations to Tracy from Tulsa who went 5-1 with his picks as a guest host on Razorpod.

The crew breaks down the LSU-Alabama game during the pick segment, and season leader Johnny Fayetteville chides the crew for their lukewarm pick of LSU. Young Fayetteville is firmly entrenced with Alabama. Unfortunately for JF, a winning or losing pick only counts as one whether you are confident or timid. Same as an objection - strenous or not - sayeth everyones favorite Lieutenant, Weinberg.

PW (33-21): Iowa, Oklahoma, Kansas State, LSU, Arkansas, UCLA

JF (37-17): Michigan, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Alabama, Arkansas, Vanderbilt

TL (34-20): Michigan, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, LSU, Arkansas, Washington

JG (34-20): Iowa, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, LSU, South Carolina, Texas Tech

Monday, October 31, 2011

Vandy Wrap; South Carolina Preview

The crew celebrates Halloween with a discussion of the hard-fought 31-28 victory over Vanderbilt.  We look ahead to the top 10 matchup this weekend in Fayetteville with South Carolina, and the titanic Alabama-LSU #1 vs. #2 matchup going head to head on your broadcast schedule with the Hogs game.  Johnny rants about the missed calls in the USC-Stanford game, and the picks contest loves the status quo.  JimmyG has a female fan, according to the mailbag?

Razorpod Picks - Week 9

The national picks roll on, and the crew welcomes longtime pod fan, Tracy in Tulsa, as a guest expert this week.

PW (29-19): Nebraska, Oklahoma, Stanford, Florida, Arkansas, Tennessee
JF (33-15): Michigan State, Oklahoma, Stanford, Georgia, Arkansas, Ole Miss
TL (30-18): Nebraska, Oklahoma, Stanford, Georgia, Arkansas, Syracuse
JG (30-18): Nebraska, Oklahoma, USC, Georgia, Vanderbilt, Georgia Tech

Tracy: Michigan State, Oklahoma, Stanford, Georgia, Arkansas, Western Kentucky

Ole Miss Wrap; Vanderbilt Preview

On tonight's Very Special episode of Razorpod, guest host Tracy from Tulsa joins the crew to discuss the HDN Special that went down in Oxford on Saturday.  The Hogs pulled out the 29-24 win over the Rebels, thanks to a late game interception and a tremendous second half.  After being down 17-0, Willy Robinson made halftime adjustments and the offense came alive.  The crew discusses why the Hogs start so slowly, whether the staff can start making better adjustments in the first half, and what needs to happen down the stretch to make sure we don't have a loss to an inferior team.  Picks contest remains static, and Johnny and Jimmy G rant about TV's influence on the average fan's college football enjoyment.

Razorpod Picks - Week 8

Hotty, Toddy, Flim, Flam, Hot Damn, Giggity! HDN and his merry band of Rebels host the Hogs this Saturday. Ole Miss has lost nine straight SEC games, is heading towards an epic Egg Bowl matchup with equally winless in SEC play, Mississippi State, and the Right Reverend's (thank you, Rece Davis) seat is warmer than asphault on Markham Street in July (thank you, Wally Hall). The crew predicts the Hogs game with Ole Miss as well as some national games of mild interest.

PW (25-17): Notre Dame, LSU, Stanford, Michigan State, Arkansas, SMU

JF (30-12): Notre Dame, LSU, Stanford, Wisconsin, Arkansas, Washington State

TL (26-16): USC, LSU, Stanford, Wisconsin, Arkansas, North Carolina

JG (27-15): Notre Dame, LSU, Stanford, Wisconsin, Arkansas, Northwestern

Ole Miss Preview

The crew is rested and healthy after the bye week.  Its HDN mania on the podcast, as JimmyG relates his  hatred of the Razorbacks' former coach.  Our thoughts are tinged with a bit of sadness, however, as this may be the last year we see Houston and his crew in the SEC.  Ole Miss has now lost 9 straight SEC games after their trouncing at the hands of Alabama.  We preview the game, and then speculate about Missouri's addition to the SEC and what that might mean for divisional realignment.  As usual, our mailbag runneth over this week.

Razorpod Picks - Week 7

A bitter pill for Jimmy G as Chris Fowler tweets that College Gameday was set to head to the Palouse and Pullman, Washington for the Stanford-Wazzu game, until Washington State lost an eight point lead and fell to UCLA last Saturday night. A crushing blow. On with this week's picks:

PW (20-16): Oregon, Texas A&M, Michigan State, Oklahoma State, Auburn, Purdue
JF (27-9): Oregon, Texas A&M, Michigan, Oklahoma State, Florida, Wake Forest
TL (22-14): Oregon, Texas A&M, Michigan, Oklahoma State, Auburn, Mississippi State
JG (23-13): Oregon, Texas A&M, Michigan, Oklahoma State, Auburn, Virginia

Auburn Wrap

The Razorbacks had a great 38-14 victory over the Auburn Tigers on Saturday, and 3 of the Razorpodders were there to witness it.  The crew discusses the win, and looks at the rest of the schedule for some rank speculation about the rest of the season's games.  Johnny F. opens a commanding lead in the picks contest, and yours truly brings up the rear.  Bye week coming up, but next week is HDN time, so we will have a preview show.  Enjoy the show, and enjoy the big win over Auburn.

Red River Rivalry

The Razorpod Crew will be in Fayetteville for the Hogs showdown with Auburn tomorrow, but at least one pod member's heart will be in Dallas, Texas for a few hours early in the day. OU-Texas brings back fond memories of undergrad days in Norman and trips to Dallas and the Texas State Fair for the big game. From 1990-1994, yours truly had the good fortune of attending the Red River Rivalry. The arrival of Jimmy G in Norman coincided with a four game losing streak for the Sooners in the game, but my last trip to the Cotton Bowl resulted in an OU blowout victory. All college football fans should make the journey at least once as it is an electric atmosphere and plenty of craziness ensues the Friday night beforehand. If you can't make it this year, please tune into ABC at 11:00 a.m. Boomer Sooner!

Razorpod Picks - Week 6

An apology to our loyal listeners and readers of the blog for not posting the Week 5 picks. A good 5-1 week for Johnny Fayetteville gives him a four game lead in the picks contest. Week 6 Picks:

PW (16-14): Nebraska, Tennessee, LSU, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Northwestern
JF (22-8): Nebraska, Georgia, LSU, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Texas Tech
TL (17-13): Nebraska, Tennessee, LSU, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Kansas State
JG (18-12): Nebraska, Georgia, LSU, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Ball State

A&M Wrap; Auburn Preview

Arkansas had a stirring second-half comeback to win the 3rd Southwest Classic against Texas A&M on Saturday.  Tyler Wilson had a school-record 515 yards passing, most of which went to co-SEC Offensive Player of the Week Jarious Wright.  The Hogs looked awful defensively, and committed far too many penalties, but took advantage of cautious Aggie play-calling down the stretch.

Next up is the defending national champion Auburn Tigers, with Arkansas products Kiehl Frazier, Michael Dyer, and Gus Mal-a-zahn coming to Fayetteville.  This game is a crucial one for the Hogs' SEC hopes, and a victory this weekend could really boost the team to a nice stretch run.  The crew spends way too much time in this week's show gloating over the A&M win, and fretting a bit about Auburn.  Picks contest remains pretty static, although JimmyG really came back to earth after last week's showing.

Hogs Come Back to Beat Aggies - Fans Displeased

After trailing 35-17 at the half and giving up almost 400 yards of offense, the Hogs rallied in the second half to defeat the Texas A & M Aggies 42-38 on Broderick Green's go ahead touchdown with 1:41 remaining. It was the first time the Hogs had the lead all day, and it took a 4th down stop with about a minute left to seal the victory.

The Aggies were no doubt shellshocked, including this fan. It was the kind of improbable win that can spark a really good season. The Hogs have Auburn coming to Fayetteville this weekend, and are (implausibly) 10 point favorites?!?!?!?

Alabama Wrap; A&M Preview

Razorpod Season 8, Episode 7 brings you the post-mortem from the Hogs' 38-14 shellacking at the hands of the Alabama Crimson Tide.  Defense and Offense had their problems, but the special teams gaffes really hurt.  After much hand-wringing, the crew puts the Bama game behind us and focuses on the upcoming Southwest Classic, now moved to a 11 am early kickoff.  Split crew on the game, and the one picking the Hogs are not the usual suspects.  The mailbag is heavy this week, and the crew has some sport with the "double-up to catchup" strategy.

Razorpod Picks - Week 4

After a wild week 3, the Razorpod pick contest is tighter than ever. Johnny Fayetteville and Jimmy G are both 12-6, Tom Logan is one game back at 11-7, and Patrick Williams is not too far behind at 9-9. Guest star, Special K, also contributed his picks during the Alabama preview show.

PW - Ole Miss, Florida State, Oklahoma State, LSU, Alabama, Toledo
JF - Georgia, Clemson, Oklahoma State, LSU, Alabama, Louisiana Tech
TL - Georgia, Florida State, Oklahoma State, LSU, Arkansas, USC
JG - Georgia, Florida State, Oklahoma State, LSU, Alabama, San Diego State
SK - Georgia, Florida State, Texas A&M, LSU, Arkansas, North Carolina

Troy Wrap; Alabama Preview

Troy gave the Razorbacks a scare in RRS last Saturday night, as the Hogs lost some intensity in the second half and let the Trojans get within 10 points before adding a Joe Adams touchdown.  Can the Hogs get that intensity back in Tuscaloosa this Saturday?  Will they be able to step up to the big time now?  Will Tyler Wilson be rattled against the top-flight Bama defense?

Special Guest Special K joins the crew for a "Very Special" episode of Razorpod.

I've got a fever and the only prescription is more cowbell!

Great Thursday night game tonight between LSU and Mississippi State. The only thing I know is that this is a great, great SNL skit.

Rock legend Bruce Dickinson is geared up for this SEC tilt. So much so, in fact, he is asking State fans for more . . . well, you know what he's asking for.

New Mexico Wrap; Troy Preview

Historic War Memorial Stadium:
9-11 Remembrance
9-10-2011
Season 8, Episode 5 brings you the wrap up of the Hogs' 52-3 victory over New Mexico at Historic War Memorial Stadium on Saturday.  Some injuries to report, although the crew's sources tells us they are none too serious.  Next up is Troy, a dangerous team which could give the Razorbacks some trouble.  The picks contest is tight early in the season, and the rants flow like wine.  Enjoy.

Razorpod Picks - Week 2

Johnny and Patrick lead the way after week one with 4-2 records. Jimmy G is 3-3, while Tom Logan is already behind the eight ball after a 1-5 disaster. Week 2 picks here:

Patrick Williams - Miss. State, Notre Dame, S. Carolina, Bama, UA, Utah
Johnny Fayetteville - Miss. State, Michigan, S. Carolina, Bama, UA, Colorado
Tom Logan - Miss. State, Michigan, S. Carolina, Bama, UA, Vanderbilt
Jimmy G - Auburn, Notre Dame, Georgia, Bama, UA, Boston College

Missouri State Wrap; New Mexico Preview

Season 8, Episode 4 brings you a shortened wrap up of the Razorbacks' 51-7 domination of the Missouri State Bears in Fayetteville.  Joe Adams wins SEC Special Teams Player of the Week honors for his 2 punt return touchdowns, the defense looked great, and Tyler Wilson and the receivers also looked strong.  The crew spends some time discussing the running game, and whether Ronnie Wingo will be able to be stronger from this game to the next and the rest of the season.  The national picks are tremendous, and there is a veritable cornucopia of sleeper games from which to pick.

We also spend some time discussing the conference realignment issues, and the breaking news that Texas A&M has been invited and has accepted an invitation to the SEC.  Much Texas-bashing ensues (YAY!) and we pose some of the various alternatives which might result from this round of realignment.  Johnny Fayetteville waxes nostalgic about the "regional texture" of college football which may be lost; then gives Boise State the back of his hand.

Razorpod Picks - Week 1

The crew is back with their weekly game selections.

PW - Maryland, BYU, Georgia, Oregon, Arkansas, Baylor
JF - Miami, BYU, Boise State, LSU, Arkansas, Troy
TL - Miami, Ole Miss, Georgia, Oregon, Arkansas, Arkansas State
JG - Miami, Ole Miss, Boise State, LSU, Arkansas, New Mexico State

Missouri State Preview

Its finally game week, and the Razorpod crew looks toward this Saturday's Missouri State matchup.  All predict a huge Hogs win; not surprisingly, all expect the defense to play well.  The first week of the picks contest is underway, and Patrick Williams is up to his old tricks.  The crew splits on Oregon-LSU and Georgia-Boise, but the split on the UGA-Boise matchup is more for spite reasons.  Enjoy this week's show, and GO HOGS!

National Sleeper Teams

The Razorpod Crew's vaunted national sleeper teams have been selected. Look for them in BCS Bowls near you in January 2012...or in the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl or in the cheering section watching their college's hoops team in December.

Tom Logan: Louisville Cardinals Jimmy G: Arizona State Sun Devils

Johnny Fayetteville: Texas Tech Red Raiders

Patrick Williams: Syracuse Orange

SEC East Preview; National Preview; National Sleeper Picks

Does anyone really understand this????
Season 8, Episode 2 brings you the crew's SEC East preview show, including a preview of the SEC Championship matchups.  We also discuss the national college football scene, including previews of all the BCS conference races.  And last, but of course not least, we have the national sleeper picks.  JimmyG like Arizona State, Tom Logan favors Louisville, Patrick Williams says Syracuse, and Johnny Fayetteville likes Texas Tech.  As always, the National Sleeper picks are open for ridicule by any and all listeners.    Enjoy the show-next week is GAME WEEK!

Season 8 Is Underway

Despite the 100 degree temperatures, fall is just around the corner. With it comes Season 8 of Razorpod. Yes, the crew is back for one last shot at glory (or competency, anyway). We get into midseason form right away with a long discussion of the Knile Davis injury and how it changes the prospects for this season. The crew remains bullish on the Hogs, and shows some remarkable unanimity on the projected record: 9-3's all around, with Patrick lodging an 8-4 record because of the Houston Dale special we all know is coming. We run down the rest of the SEC West, and delve into Texas A&M's flirtation with the SEC. We never lost the opportunity for some good old Texas-bashing as well. Johnny has a rant, even though the season hasn't kicked off yet.
