Hogs 4th Most Underrated Team of Last Decade

Per Mark Schlabach, at ESPN. The formula is simple, compare where a team is ranked preseason to where it finishes. The Hogs have a bit of an advantage here, as I recall them being ranked in preseason only twice in the last 10 years, this year included. I think they've finished in the Top 25 three times in that time span.

I'm not sure Schlabach's column demonstrates anything of any particular relevance. Case in point, "Eight teams that won or shared national championships during the previous 10 seasons also were among college football's most overrated teams since 1997." Huh?

Better yet, "Since 1997, only 60 percent of the teams ranked in the preseason top 25 were still ranked at the end of the season. And nearly half (49 percent) of the teams in the top 10 fell out by season's end."

His column proves nothing about the teams, but does demonstrate that preseason polls are stupid and generally meaningless.

I have argued many times that the first poll shouldn't be conducted until the week before the BCS rankings come out.
